Clayton Glendy and 2018 Wrestling Team Inducted into Broken Bow Athletic Hall of Fame

The Broken Bow wrestling program was honored in a special way on Friday evening when a past individual wrestler for the program and a team from the past were inducted into the Broken Bow Athletic Hall of Fame.

Clayton Glendy is the newest individual member of the hall of fame. Glendy won the Class C 120 lb. championship as a senior in 2017. It marked the first time a Broken Bow wrestler won an individual state wrestling title since Gary Ellingsen in 1970. Broken Bow head wrestling coach Ed Schaaf shared with Central Nebraska’s Sports Source what made Glendy special and the way he impacted the Broken Bow wrestling program

“His work ethic.  He went to camps he was always out trying to get better at wrestling.  He was huge for our program because he showed kids that you can be a state champion.  Once he showed what it takes to get there, kids just started to believe that if Clayton can do that I can do that to.  It was monumental for us.  He kind of got things rolling for us.”

Also inducted into the hall of fame Friday night was the 2018 team which claimed Broken Bow’s first state wrestling team championship by winning the Class C state duals championship that year. In 2018, the state duals took place the week after the state tournament. The defending champion was Valentine who had just claimed the state tournament team championship the week before. Broken Bow met Valentine in the championship dual and was able to knock off the Badgers 46-31. Coach Schaaf recalled that exciting day.

“They had like five state champions that weekend before and I think another couple of state medalists.  So they were absolutely loaded.  And we just – duals are one thing that, time to time, if you can get on a roll good things just seem to happen.  We got on a good side of it and it was neat.”

Since 2017, the Broken Bow wrestling program has claimed seven individual state titles, three state duals championships, and one state tournament title.
