Broken Bow Senior MaKinley Tobey Signs to Play Basketball for Peru State

Central Nebraska’s Sports Source was invited to the letter of intent signing for Broken Bow senior MaKinley Tobey who has signed to join the women’s basketball program at Peru State College in Peru, Nebraska.  Tobey had a standout senior season for the Broken Bow girls basketball program averaging 18 points per game and was a second team Class C1 all state girls basketball selection by both the Omaha World Herald and Lincoln Journal Star.  Tobey said that Peru State reached out to her and that was how the conversation was started.

“They reached out to me and then we kind of exchanged phone numbers.  They came and watched a few games.  Talked to them after that and then after basketball season we set up a visit.  It was a hard decision on what school I was going to choose but when I went and visited it really felt like home.  The coaches they helped me a lot by kind of asking questions and seeing what I really like so that was important.”

There was a Broken Bow tie to Tobey’s recruitment.  Michael Sybrant, a 1991 graduate of Broken Bow high school, serves as an assistant coach for Peru and played a major role in recruiting Tobey.

“Yeah.  He was the main person who recruited me and him being from Broken Bow is really special too.”

Tobey talked about her basketball journey through high school and how her game has developed to get her to this point.

“My freshman year I didn’t play a lot I guess but that kind of motivated me to get in the gym more.  I was in the gym a lot just shooting around.  That helped me a lot.”

While in college, Tobey plans to pursue a degree in dentistry.
