Twin Loup and McCool Junction had to go to overtime to determine the D1-6 boys basketball district champion. Twin Loup played from behind the majority of the game but tied the game 53-53 on a steal and layup by Mace Beran with 3:20 left in the fourth quarter. The score stayed that way until Yahya Harris made a free throw to give Twin Loup the lead with 1:40 left in regulation. After retaking the lead 55-54 with 1:14 left, McCool Junction made two free throws with 32 seconds left to go up by three. That set the stage for Twin Loup’s Yahya Harris who hit a three pointer to tie the game 57-57 with 20 seconds left. Twin Loup was able to come up with a defensive stop in the final seconds to force overtime. In overtime, the teams went back and forth. Down by one in overtime, with 34 seconds left, Twin Loup had the ball with a chance to take the lead but could not score as McCool Junction held on for a 63-62 win. McCool Junction advances to the boys state basketball tournament next week in Lincoln while Twin Loup saw its season come to an end with an overall record of 21-4. Twin Loup was led in scoring by Yahya Harris and Jackson Hall who finished with 24 and 20 points respectively. A video replay of the D1-6 district final is posted below.
Mullen saw its season come to an end Tuesday night falling to Archangels Catholic of Humphrey 70-40 in the D2-2 boys basketball district final. Mullen was held without a field goal in the first quarter and scored just two points from the free throw line in the first eight minutes as Archangels built a 23-2 lead after the first quarter. Mullen tried to fight back but the deficit was too much to overcome. Mullen was led by Ben Werner who knocked down three 3’s in the game and finished with a team high 12 points. Jacob Walker also finished in double figures for the Broncos with 11. Archangels advances to the boys state basketball tournament next week in Lincoln while Mullen concludes its season at 12-11 overall.
