Broken Bow School Board Approves Teacher Contracts

The Broken Board of Education held its April 2025 meeting Monday evening at the Broken Bow Library. All Board members were present.

Following the approval of the minutes from the previous meeting, Amy Staples provided the Treasurer’s and Claims report. Staples stated that income in March totaled 1,953,559.97, and expenses totaled 963,184.34, with a balance as of March 31 of 13,601,621.65. Staples said the revenue in March was higher due to entry timing but that it will average out. The Board unanimously approved the reports.

Superintendent Darren Tobey presented recent district accolades, including the success of Brynn Custer, who won the Class C1 State Speech Championship in Informative Speaking and runner-up in Persuasive Speaking. Tobey congratulated the Broken Bow students who won state and national awards at the FBLA State Leadership Conference.

During public comments, the Board heard from several lady wrestlers who asked the members to consider implementing a middle school girls’ wrestling program. The students told the members that a middle school program would enhance their skills and allow them to compete at a higher level in high school. Board President Tom Osmond thanked the group for their comments and said they would take the matter under advisement.

During Administrator Comments, Mr. Tobey covered some details on the graduation ceremony that will take place outside this year. He also talked about the progress of the school’s construction and remodeling projects. Tobey said painting has started on the existing gym, and most of the pouring is done in the new building and the middle school. Punch List reviews are underway at the middle school to ensure the construction work meets standards. Punch Lists walk-throughs for the high school will begin next week.

Mr. Tobey announced plans to open a position for a CNA or Med Aide to help at the high school next year and assist the school nurse. The Aide would only work when students are in class.

During the agenda’s action and discussion items, the Board approved several policies that Board members reviewed during their work session on April 7.

The Board members approved four one-year teacher contracts. Britni Taylor, Makaylin Kahrs, Mackenzie Klimek, and Taylor Winners will fill open positions for the next school year and begin teaching at Broken Bow Public Schools in August 2025.

Board President Osmond announced that a negotiated contract with the teachers has been completed. Osmond said with the changes made, he believes this new contract will allow Superintendent Tobey to hire the best teachers possible. All Board members voted to approve the contract.

The next work session will be held at noon in the Broken Bow Library on May 5. The next regular meeting is scheduled for May 19 and will be held in the new Board Room at the school. Both meetings are open to the public.
