State Track (Wednesday) – Class B Area Recap

The 2023 NSAA state track and field championships began Wednesday with the opening day of competition for classes A and B.

Broken Bow qualified eight entries for the Class B state meet. Among the Bow highlights on Wednesday, Max Denson placed 5th in the class B boys shot put. Denson’s top effort was 54′ 3″ which was a personal best in competition. Denson actually tied for the 4th best throw of the tournament but received the 5th place medal on the tie break which is determined by one’s second best throw. Denson will compete in the boys discus on Thursday.

Broken Bow’s Taylor Schaaf competed in the girls discus on Wednesday. Schaaf finished with a top effort of 105′ which was 20th best overall at the state meet. The class B girls discus was won by Madison Smith of Gothenburg with a winning effort of 145′ 2″. The Broken Bow girls 4×800 meter relay team of Halle Quinn, MaKinley Tobey, Maren Chapin, and Gaby Staples posted a time of 10:13.88 which was 13th best at the state meet. Noah Osmond was just outside the top 8 for a medal in the class B boys 3200 meter run. Osmond finished 10th overall with a time of 10:12.36. Zane Eggleston of Broken Bow competed in the prelims of the boys class B 300 meter hurdles Wednesday. Eggleston finished outside the top 8 to make the finals finishing with the 11th fastest time in the prelims at 41.36 seconds.

Other medal winners from the area included:
Cord Chytka of Cozad 4th in the class B boys triple jump with an effort of 44′ 8″
Cash Chytka of Cozad tied for 5th in the class B boys high jump clearing 6′ 2″
Gothenburg was 7th in the class B boys 4×800 meter relay.
Ava Weyers of Gothenburg 4th in the class B girls long jump with an effort of 16′ 10″

In other area notes, Gothenburg’s Aubrey O’Hare qualified for the finals of the class B girls 100 meter hurdles. O’Hare had the 4th fastest qualifying time at 15.18 seconds. O’Hare also qualified for the final in the 300 meter hurdles as did Karyn Burkholder of Cozad.

Classes A and B wrap up Thursday with field events beginning at 9 a.m. Running events will begin on the track at 1:30. Central Nebraska’s Sports Source will provide live hourly updates on KBBN 95.3 FM and kbbn.com beginning in the 11 a.m. hour.
