Today we continue with our fall sports previews as we put the spotlight on the Ansley/Litchfield Spartans football team. Kurt Kulhanek enters his 5th year as head coach. The Spartans will drop down to Class D2 this season after competing in Class D1 the last two seasons. The affects of the coronavirus have been widely felt in the sports world since mid March. One of the affects that local high school athletes had to deal with was the closing of the schools’ weight rooms for two plus months until they were able to re-open in June. Coach Kulhanek told KCNI/KBBN radio that he was very pleased with the way players worked out individually during that time and came to fall camp in good shape.
The Spartans plan to have close to 30 athletes suiting up this season. Ansley/Litchfield finished just 1-7 last season and while it was a difficult season from a win / loss standpoint young players were given the opportunity to compete and learn the game. The effort given by last year’s team and the experience gained has coach Kulhanek excited about this season.
Kulhanek was high on the leadership quality of all those who look to see quality playing time this season and mentioned Tycen Bailey and Kolby Larson as two players who will help lead the Spartans through their 2020 schedule.
Ansley/Litchfield will compete in the D2-9 district with Pleasanton, Sandhills Valley, Sandhills/Thedford, South Loup, and Twin Loup. The Spartans will open the season Thursday August 27th at Anselmo-Merna which will be broadcast live on KBBN 95.3 FM and kbbn.com. Other games featuring Ansley/Litchfield this season on KBBN will include
9/25 vs Twin Loup
10/2 at Sandhills/Thedford
10/9 vs South Loup
