Sandy Creek, Wynot, and Waverly Claim State Football Titles

Three NSAA state football championship games were played Monday at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln.

Sandy Creek repeated as the Class D1 state champions winning big over Crofton 66-26.  It’s the first time a team has won back-to-back Class D1 state titles since Elgin Public/Pope John won back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2012.  The head coach of EPPJ during that run was current Broken Bow head coach Carlie Wells.  Sandy Creek outscored Crofton 37-6 in the second quarter to pull away.  Sandy Creek quarterback Kam Sealey was the star of the game.  Sealey accounted for nine touchdowns.  Sealey was 17 of 24 passing for 272 yards and four touchdowns and finished with 203 yards rushing with five rushing touchdowns.

In the Class D2 state championship, St. Mary’s of O’Neill and Wynot set a new D2 record for most combined points in a championship game as Wynot outlasted St. Mary’s 71-60.  The two teams combined for 920 yards of total offense.  Wynot quarterback Devin Brummer finished 23 of 26 passing for 394 yards and seven touchdowns.  Brummer’s top target was Kotner Koch who finished with 13 catches for 265 yards and four touchdowns.  St. Mary’s quarterback Gage Hedstrom finished with nine total touchdowns which included six passing and three rushing.  Hedstrom completed 17 of his 30 pass attempts for 347 yards.  It is Wynot’s first state football championship.

In Class B, Waverly claimed its first state title since 1980 by defeating Gretna East 42-27 to finish an undefeated season.  Waverly finished with 470 yards of total offense led by running back Nathan Axmann who carried the ball 41 times for 277 yards and three touchdowns.
