The NSAA state track and field championships begin today at Burke Stadium in Omaha. Classes A and B will be featured today and tomorrow while classes C and D will compete on Friday and Saturday. Broken Bow is among the teams competing in Class B. The Indians qualified four individuals and one relay for the state tournament this year.
Drew Ellis qualified for state in both the boys shot put and discus. Ellis was the B-6 district champion in both events. The Class B boys shot put is scheduled for today at 11:30 and the Class B boys discus will take place on Thursday starting at Noon. Broken Bow will also be represented in the boys throwing events by Gunner Baltz and Aiden Page. Baltz was a state qualifier in the boys discus last season and returns to Burke after placing third in the discus at the B-6 district meet last week. Aiden Page is a freshman and will be making his first state tournament appearance as he competes in the boys shot put. Page finished as the B-6 district runner up in the event.
Charlee Myers will be representing Broken Bow in the girls pole vault. Myers was the B-6 district runner up and becomes the first Broken Bow girls pole vaulter to qualify for the state tournament. Myers set the school record in the event earlier this season when she cleared 10′ 7″ at the Dave Gee Invite at Northwest High School. The Class B girls pole vault is scheduled to start at 9 am this morning.
Broken Bow will compete in the girls 4×800 meter relay today. The team of Lauryn Hansen, Ashlyn Schauda, Izzy Shelton, and Halle Quinn qualified for state as an additional qualifier based on their time at districts. The Class B girls 4×800 meter relay will be the first event on the track today at 1:30.
Central Nebraska’s Sports Source will be reporting live today from the state championships with hourly updates on KBBN 95.3 FM and kbbn.com.
