Mullen’s Walker, Werner take home Class D golf medals

COLUMBUS, Neb.— State golf wrapped up at four sites across the state today, including the class D tournament held at Quail Run in Columbus. Several area golfers were among those competing.

Two medals are going to head back to Mullen in the hands of Jacob Walker and Ben Werner. Walker improved on his Wednesday score of 78 by two strokes on Thursday, coming into the clubhouse with a 76 which was good enough for 5th place. Werner will take home hardware as well as a part of a three way tie for 10th. He shot an 84 on Thursday.

Burwell’s Kason Larson stayed consistent in day two of competition, equaling his 83 from day one to take 24th place.

Sumner-Eddyville-Miller was represented by Bode Martin, who shot a 92 in day two competition to come in 32nd.

The class D tournament was won by Lukas Armstrong of Red Cloud, who shot a 73 and a 72 each day to take the gold medal. The team race was seized by Creighton, who finished 40 strokes ahead of second place Red Cloud.

In class C, Kearney Catholic’s Nash Malone finished at -5 after strong rounds of 68 and 71 to place first in a tight two stroke race with Sutton freshman Myles Smith. Bergan Catholic and Adams Central went to a playoff after tying in the team race, with Bergan Catholic eventually taking the crown.

In class B, Austin Jochum of Bennington placed first representing Bennington. The sophomore put in scores of 73 and 71 to average par for the tournament. Bennington would take the top spot as a team, golfing 12 strokes less than second place Norris.

Exceptional golf was played in class A competition, with all golfers placing 6th or higher averaging at least par or better. Carter Honnens of Lincoln East came out on top, as the junior put together two great scores of 66 and 68 to finish 5 strokes ahead of the closest golfer. Lincoln East came together as a team to take first there as well, coming in ahead of Creighton Prep by six strokes.
