Several area athletes competed in high school all-star sporting events over the weekend. Cal Wells of Broken Bow and Noah Shoemaker of Cozad were among the players that participated in the 67th annual Shrine Bowl all-star football game in Kearney on Saturday. Wells was a member of the victorious North team who defeated the South 28-21. It was the North team’s 4th straight win in the series. The North led 8-7 at halftime but the teams then combined for 34 points in the second half with the North team hanging on for the win. The North finished with 359 total yards including 200 rushing yards led by South Sioux City’s Antonio Palmer who finished with 98 yards rushing. Twin Loup head coach Mike Kozeal served as one of the assistants for the North team.
The West Nebraska all-star volleyball and football games were played Saturday in Scottsbluff. The West team defeated the East in the 41st volleyball match. The teams played five sets with the west team winning all five by scores of 27-25, 25-10, 25-19, 25-19, and 15-10. Representing the East team were Maren Chapin and Addison Ellis of Broken Bow and Taryn O’Hare of Gothenburg. The West team defeated the East 21-7 in the 47th West Nebraska All Star Game. Reid Fiscus of Sidney led the way for the West team with two rushing touchdowns and connecting on a 74-yard touchdown pass to Sidney’s Patrick McCartney. Justin French of Mullen was among the players suiting up for the victorious West team. Area athletes representing the East team included Josiah Griffith of Anselmo-Merna, Tyson Hickman of Sandhills/Thedford, AJ Starr and Jamie Tickle of South Loup, Cohen Rohde and Maddox Jones of SEM, Leyton Connell and Colton Miller of Sandhills Valley, Jackson Daum, Zander Hruza, Jackson Schwanz, and Maxwell Wyatt of Gothenburg, Jayden Smith and Lane Wright of Cozad.
North Platte Community College hosted the “Black and Gold” All Star girls and boys basketball games on Saturday. The Gold team won the girls game 62-49. Broken Bow’s Gaby Staples was chosen as the game’s most valuable player. Also playing for the gold team were Maddie Diederichs of Broken Bow, Ragan Mauler of Twin Loup, and Alex Beveridge of Gothenburg. Janae Marten of Broken Bow suited up for the Black team. The boys game went down to the wire with the Black team claiming a 61-59 win. Kyle Kramer of Sandhills Valley was among the players who competed for the Black team.
