Student banned from Nebraska City Public Schools property after making threat

NEBRASKA CITY - A Nebraska City Public Schools student is facing consequences and is no longer allowed on school grounds after making a threatening statement towards the school. Superintendent Dr. Jeff Edwards issued a statement in a letter sent to parents Sunday afternoon and posted on the schools' website. "The security of our students is our highest priority and we are taking every reasonable step to ensure your students' safety at the school. By the same token, even idle threats by students are unacceptable." School district officials worked closely with law enforcement in investigating the issue when they were notified by the Nebraska City Police Department. Schools and law enforcement agencies across the country have seen a significant rise in threats of violence since the tragic events in Parkland, Fla. and southeast Nebraska schools have not been immune from this phenomenon. Just last week, both Syracuse High School and Plattsmouth High School discovered similar threats. "We also urge every parent to reiterate with his or her students that these sorts of threats are not funny, or a game," Edwards continued in the letter. "The school district and law enforcement will take every threatening statement seriously and will react to them immediately." Details about the threat made towards NCPS are limited, but parents who have questions about the safety of their students can contact Edwards or any other member of the Nebraska City Public Schools administrative team.
