1,000 pounds of marijuana seized in Sarpy County

Authorities found 1,000 pounds of marijuana after a traffic stop in Sarpy County early Wednesday morning. A Sarpy County sheriff's deputy pulled over a van on Interstate 80 south of Harrison Street/Giles Road exit about 2:30 a.m., according to a press release. A Douglas County Sheriff's Office deputy and K-9 assisted. Along with two 20-year-old occupants, one from Georgia and one from Texas, the deputies found about a half-ton of marijuana. "It's the biggest I remember," said Sarpy County Sheriff's Lt. Greg Monico. Monico said more than 700 vacuum-sealed bags full of pot were found in the van. The men were booked into Sarpy County Jail on suspicion of possession of marijuana with intent to deliver. Officials will log the bags into evidence until the case is resolved, then destroy them. One of the last times a half-ton of marijuana was recovered in one stop, according to World-Herald records, was in 2000. A Nebraska State Patrol trooper pulled over a 30-foot mobile home in York County. After the trooper called for a drug-sniffing dog to help with the search, 1,038 pounds of marijuana was found. In December, Douglas County sheriff's deputies seized 462 pounds of marijuana with an estimated street value of $2 million — their largest bust in recent years, the agency said.
