Johnson Lake tests positive for E. coli

Johnson Lake near Lexington has tasted positive for E. coli ahead of the Memorial Day weekend, according to Two Rivers Public Health Department (TRPHD).

According to the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy, samples that are above 235 colonies per 100 ml of water are considered high. Unlike with dangerous levels of HABs (Harmful Algal Blooms), signs are not specifically posted and beaches are not closed for high bacteria levels because bacteria values change quickly. Instead, information is provided to allow the public to make their own decision on whether to use the lake or not.

During sampling on May 19, Johnson Lake tested at 1,203 colonies per 100 ml.

Other lakes in the state testing above the level considered as high include Carter Lake at the North Shore Boat Ramp, Fremont Lake No. 20 (SRA) at West Beach, Holmes Like at North Shore, and Swan Creek Lake (5A) at the beach.

Those wanting to enjoy lake activities are encouraged to avoid situations that could cause the swallowing of lake water, to take a shower after being in contact with lake water, and to wash hands before eating after being in contact with lake water.

Those fishing in waters with E. Coli are encouraged to wash their hands with soap and water after touching fish, fishing gear, or water. For fish that are kept, E. coli can be killed with high heat. Ensuring that fish is cooked to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit is important.
