Mullen claimed its first state championship in volleyball on Saturday as the Broncos claimed the Class D2 title with an impressive three set sweep of defending state champion Wynot (25-18, 25-11, 25-15). Mullen hit .272 for the match while holding Wynot to just .033 hitting. Mullen’s defense through the tournament was outstanding holding all three opponents they faced to below .100 hitting. Jenna Donohoe led Mullen with a team high 13 kills to go along with four blocks. Abigail Gracey also finished in double figures in kills with ten. Kalli Licking directed the Mullen attack finishing with 33 assists. Mullen head coach Nichole Ourada visited with the media following the match.
“Yeah. We came in, we were prepared. We scouted them obviously and we knew kind of what they did and we were able to play very well defensively. And we also knew kind of their open shots on the court that our hitters had and because we have such a balanced attack, we were able to, if somebody was shut down, we were able to mix it up and throw it around to the pins or if pins were struggling to the middle. We just had a game plan in place and the girls executed it very well. And their inner competitor came out today and they they wanted to win. We’ve had the number of days to Devaney on our marker board since day one of practice and we knew we could get here, we knew we would be here, and we knew we could win. So these girls were determined. Every day of practice they showed up and it it got us here today. We didn’t just win today, we’ve been winning every day of the season.
Mullen’s state volleyball championship is the first state title in any girls sport at the school and it marked the first time someone from the Mountain Time Zone won a state volleyball title since Paxton claimed the D2 title back in 2007. During the championship press conference, Jenna Donohoe said that the goal was to be able to hang a championship banner.
“That was our goal all along was to hang a banner on the wall and the gold ones are second, third, fourth and we get to put up a black one which means we got first and I think that shows our grit and determination for the first one for the girls.”
Mullen concludes the season with a 33-2 overall record.
