EMMITSBURG, MD – The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation will be honoring some familiar names during its 42nd National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, on May 6 and 7 in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
Mike Moody of Purdum, who lost his life in service during the Bovee Fire of October 2022 at age 59, and Broken Bow’s James Bissonette, who passed in 2021 due to complications with COVID-19 at the age of 34, are two area firefighters to be honored by the foundation.
Darren Krull, who also gave his life in the line of duty in 2022, will be honored as well. Krull served 36 years as a firefighter and EMT, including two stints as fire chief in Overton and Elwood. Krull lost his life in a vehicle accident when responding to a large wildfire in Furnas County in 2022. He was 54.
The three will be added to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation’s Roll of Honor, a nationwide registry of fallen firefighters alongside Fairbury Rural Volunteer Fire Department’s Christopher Parker and nearly 150 other firefighters nationwide.
A candlelight service will be held on May 6 at 8:30 p.m. central time, and a ceremony honoring the firefighters will be held on Sunday, May 7 at 9 a.m. Both events will be streamed through the foundation’s YouTube channel and Facebook page.
