September is observed nationally as National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Kelly Herbig is an RN and Program Director for Callaway District Hospital’s Senior Life Solutions. While the Senior Life Solutions program focuses on older adults, Herbig said during this month they want to reach out and connect with all age groups.
“It’s a month that we have observance and try to raise more awareness for suicide prevention and try to help people open up those conversations, feel better talking about it, being able to recognize warning signs, reduce stigma, and making sure people know what resources are available,” said Herbig.
Following a great turnout at the event last year, Herbig said the suicide prevention and awareness walk is coming back on the 17th from 11:30 AM until 1 PM
“We’re going to be doing a ride, walk, run, bike, whatever. Last year we had bicycles and we had side-by-sides and we had people running and walking with their kids in their strollers. It will be at Morgan Park in Callaway. And we’re serving a free lunch to the community,” Herbig explained.
Herbig said there will be several displays throughout the Callaway District Hospital this month to engage the staff and community including a “Tree of Hope” where people can leave encouraging and positive messages.
