The Broken Bow police department has released the following information regarding a motor vehicle / bicycle accident which occurred during the afternoon of July 13th.
Broken Bow, Nebraska — At approximately 4:04 p.m. on July 13, 2026, officers with the Broken Bow Police Department responded to the 800 block of South 8th Avenue following a report of a motor vehicle versus bicycle accident.
The preliminary investigation indicates the incident involved a utility pickup truck traveling southbound on South 8th Avenue and a 9-year-old male from Broken Bow who was riding a bicycle and crossing South 8th Avenue at South H Street. Based on the preliminary investigation, it appears the bicyclist failed to stop at the westbound stop sign before entering the intersection.
The juvenile was transported by the Broken Bow Ambulance Service to Jennie M. Melham Memorial Medical Center before being airlifted to an Omaha hospital due to the serious injuries sustained in the collision.
Our thoughts are with the young victim, his family, and everyone affected by this incident. We recognize that incidents involving children have a profound impact on our entire community, and we appreciate the patience and understanding of the public with this incident.
The Broken Bow Police Department would also like to thank the Broken Bow Ambulance Service and the Custer County Sheriff’s Office for their prompt response and assistance at the scene.
This incident also serves as an important reminder for everyone traveling our streets to remain alert and exercise caution. Motorists are encouraged to watch carefully for pedestrians and bicyclists, especially in residential neighborhoods and areas where children may be present.
The young bicyclist involved in this incident was wearing a properly fitted bicycle helmet. While the extent to which a helmet affected the outcome of this collision cannot be determined, bicycle helmets are designed to significantly reduce the risk of serious head injuries. This incident is a reminder of the importance of wearing a helmet every time you ride. The Broken Bow Police Department strongly encourages parents to ensure their children wear properly fitted helmets and reminds bicyclists of all ages to obey traffic laws, remain alert, and make themselves as visible as possible.
