Burwell hosted its annual track and field invitational on Friday. Athletes fought through strong winds and cold temperatures to deliver some outstanding performances. Teams that competed included Burwell, Anselmo-Merna, Arcadia/Loup City, Fullerton, Mullen, Plainview, Riverside, Sandhills/Thedford, South Loup, NG/SE, Stuart, Twin Loup, and West Holt. Anselmo-Merna claimed the boys team title with 119 points followed by Arcadia/Loup City in second with 93 points and South Loup was third with 67 points. The girls team champion was Plainview followed by Burwell in second and South Loup was third.
Among the area highlights, Anselmo-Merna’s Trevor Duryea took gold in both the boys long jump and triple jump. Duryea’s winning effort in the long jump was 20′ 8.5 inches and his winning effort in the triple jump was 45′ which set a new meet record. Mieke van der Walt of Burwell captured three golds winning the girls 400 in a time of 1:03.52, the girls 100 meter hurdles in a time of 15.68, and the girls 300 meter hurdles in a time of 48.28. Erin Fitzgerald of South Loup won the girls 100 in a time of 13.25 and the won the girls 200 in a time of 28.05. Addie Critel of Burwell won the girls 800 in a time of 2:27.58. Critel also won the girls 1600 in a time of 5:48.23.
Mullen’s Alex Werner won the boys 400 in a time of 53.53. Dutch Miller of ALC won the boys 3200 in a time of 10:59.26 and Lena Spencer of Burwell won the girls 3200 in a time of 13:01.28. Tim Myers of Anselmo-Merna won the boys 110 meter hurdles in a time of 15.56. Colin Wright of Anselmo-Merna won the boys 200 in a time of 22.97 seconds. Destrey White and Colin Wright of Anselmo-Merna each cleared 6′ 2″ in the boys high jump. On the tie break, White was the champion and Wright was second. Emmett Grint of Twin Loup won the boys 300 meter hurdles in a winning time of 43.30 seconds. EvaLynn Wonch of South Loup won the girls discus with a winning effort of 127′ 4″.
In the relays, Arcadia/Loup City won the girls 4×800 meter relay. The team of LaMor Santos, Tenley Panowicz, Charlize Meyer, and Tayler Obermiller posted a winning time of 11:00.51. Arcadia/Loup City won the boys 4×800 meter relay. The team of Eli Jaixen, Dutch Miller, Carter Schmidt, and Brogan Setlik posted a winning time of 9:00.24. Anselmo-Merna won the boys 4×100 meter relay. The team of Trevor Duryea, Colin Wright, Dane Duryea, and Destrey White posted a winning time of 46.47 seconds. Burwell won the girls 4×400. The team of Addie Critel, Regan Smith, Jalise Busch, and Miede van der Walt posted a winning time of 4:33.91. ALC won the boys 4×400. The team of Ryan Kaslon, Eli Jaixen, Brogan Setlik, and Tyce Calleroz posted a winning time of 3:44.06.
