LINCOLN, Neb.— The City of Ogallala has been designated as a Certified Local Government by the Nebraska State Historic Preservation Office, which is a department of the Nebraska State Historical Society.
This program, of which Ogallala is now a part of, is meant to increase local preservation activities and link together local governments. Governments such as Ogallala’s meet federal and state standards and work to preserve, revitalize, and promote their historic resources and cultural properties.
According to a release from the Nebraska State Historical Society, Ogallala worked on planning activities to locally recognize historic places important to the community when they were pursuing becoming a Certified Local Government.
All villages, cities, and counties are eligible to be a part of the program like Ogallala. Other current governments include Auburn, Crete, Fairbury, Hebron, Lincoln, Neligh, North Platte, Omaha, Plattsmouth, Red Cloud, and Sidney.
Across the country, there are more than 2,100 Certified Local Governments benefitting from annual matching grants and access to preservation-based economic development tools.
Those seeking more information on becoming a Certified Local Government can contact Kelli Bacon, Certified Local Government Coordinator at 402-540-5847 or [email protected] or visit history.nebraska.gov/historicpreservation.
