The Merna Volunteer Fire Department received a new tool in its firefighting arsenal recently. On November 22, the department took possession of “Merna 24”, a 2024 Ford F550 truck modified for wildland firefighting by Watts Manufacturing in Salina, KS.

Merna Fire Chief Ernie Johnson told KCNI/KBBN that the department had a hand in developing the equipment and layout of the firefighting equipment installed on the truck. Along with a 450 gallon water tank and on-board foam fire suppression systems, the department added an additional second station for a firefighter to stand and attack rangeland blazes.

Assistance in purchasing the truck, which cost in the neighborhood of $160,000, was provided by Farm Credit Services with a $15,000 grant and Country Partners Cooperative who provided a $10,000 matching award.

The Department also thanks the many generous community members who donated funds for the new truck, including through the Custer County Foundation’s summer Give 4 Custer County Campaign. The department also gave a BIG thank you to the members of the Merna Rural Fire Board for their ongoing support.

Three years in the works, the new truck replaces a 1989 model. Johnson noted that while the prior vehicle was still a good truck, it was no longer keeping up with the demands put to it. The Merna Volunteer Fire Department hopes to get another 30 years out of their new firefighting equipment.
