The SEM volleyball team fell just short in their bid to advance to their second state championship match in the last three years as they fell to Cambridge (3-1) in the Class D2 state semifinals on Friday at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln. SEM took the first set 26-24 but Cambridge tied the match winning 30-28 in the second set. Cambridge took the third 25-14 and closed out the match winning 25-20 in the fourth. Taryn Arbuthnot had 33 of SEM’s 48 kills in the match. Arbuthnot also had three blocks and 14 digs. Jaycelyn Hoos had eight kills and 19 assists for the Mustangs. Cambridge hit .216 for the match and was led by Brooklyn Holtze who finished with a team high 29 kills.
On the other side of the D2 bracket, top seed Wynot held off Dundy County Stratton 3-1 to collect its 30th win of the season.
Cambridge will face Wynot for the D2 state championship Saturday morning at the Devaney Center in Lincoln. SEM will face Dundy County Stratton in the D2 third place consolation match at 11 a.m. at Lincoln East High School. SEM / DCS match will be broadcast on KBBN 95.3 FM and kbbn.com.
