New Science areas are nearing completion. Teachers and students have moved into the new classrooms. The Chemistry laboratory is now on-line. Tobey indicated the Biology Lab facility will be ready for students at the beginning of the second semester.

The former front entrance of the Senior High will be open for athletic events starting November 3. The doors will be locked during the school day. Also projected to be ready for use are new locker rooms for boys and girls athletics. The new facilities boast twice the space as previously available.

The financial report indicated September expenditures of $1,236,715.44 against income of $1,326,108.23. As has been previously noted the expenditures are slightly higher than normal, covering a handful of building improvements and equipment not addressed through the construction bond.

Broken Bow Superintendent Darren Tobey noted one expenditure paid to Hausmann Construction Inc representing a payment made when work by the company has reached an 80% complete state.

In Admin comments, Tobey noted that he and Business Manager Kay Einspahr had recently attended the Nebraska State Bank Fraud workshop. A presentation of audit results will be provided by accountants at Dana F. Cole & Company at the Board’s Work Session on November 3.

The board discussed the availability of health insurance to board members. The District is required to make available to board members the same insurance that BBPS Staff have. However, board members must pay the premium out of pocket. Only one member currently uses this policy, and only one other seemed interested in reviewing the possibility.

The Board approved funding of up to $4,000 from the Anderson Grant to fund FBLA Travel to the National Fall Leadership Conference.

During Policy Review, Tobey noted a recommendation from KSB School Law to retain language as found in the policies as they were originally written. Board Member Pam Holcomb recommended adding grades to behavior and attendance to reasons for revoking open campus privileges. The board will take up the suggestion at the November meeting.

District Accolades

In District Accolades, Tobey called out Charlee Myers and Halle Quinn as recipients of the The Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA) Believers and Achievers award for their excellence in academics, participation in NSAA activities, and commitment to citizenship, school involvement and community projects.

Tobey also highlighted the FFA program for their showing in the October 8 Livestock Judging competition. The Junior Division team took the District Championship, with Broken Bow’s Hayden Christen the individual Champion in the Division, and Isabella Faltys taking the individual Champion’s spot in the Junior High Division.

The next meetings of the Broken Bow Board of Education will be a working meeting at noon on November 3, and the regular meeting at 6:00 PM on November 17. Meetings take place in the District Conference Room of the Broken Bow Middle School / High School.
