It was day two of the NSAA boys state basketball tournament Thursday with opening round games played in Classes D2, C2, and Class B.
In Class C2, Archbishop Bergan of Fremont upset the top seed Freeman 51-49. Freeman led 49-41 with 3:07 to play but Bergan ended the game on a 10-0 run to stun the top seeded Falcons and advance to Friday’s semifinals. Bergan will face Summerland in the semis. Summerland led Exeter/Milligan/Friend by five at half and slowly pulled away in the 2nd half for a 68-55 win. On the other side of the bracket, West Holt held #2 seed Yutan to below 25% shooting for the game as the Huskies advanced to the C2 semifinals with a 48-33 victory. West Holt will face Cross County in the semis. Cross County defeated Cedar Catholic 41-38.
In Class D2, top seed St. Mary’s of O’Neill defeated Silver Lake 50-34. St. Mary’s trailed early 4-3 with 4:35 left in the first quarter but retook the lead less than a minute later and never trailed again. St. Mary’s advances to the state semifinals where they will face Archangels Catholic who edged Stuart 61-59. Archangels overcame a 14 point deficit with 3:12 to play in the fourth quarter and ended the game on a 16-0 run to pull off the dramatic win. On the other side of the bracket, Wausa defeated Fullerton 61-33 and Wynot held off Elgin Public Pope John 60-53.
In Class B opening round action Thursday, top seed Norris scored six points in the last six seconds including a game winning three from beyond half court at the buzzer to knock off Lincoln Pius 52-49. Norris will face Omaha Skutt in the semis. Skutt defeated DC West 71-31. On the other side of the Class B bracket, Scottsbluff defeated Gretna East 65-60 and Elkhorn North defeated Wahoo 74-65.
The state semifinals in all classes are Friday.
