The Custer County Diamond Youth Organization is encouraging parents to sign up their children soon if they wish to participate in this summer’s youth baseball and softball programs. Programs are available for all age groups beginning with “Blast Ball” for 3-4 year olds (designed to introduce young children to the sport) all the way up to Senior Legion baseball and 18U softball. DYO members Josh Page, Sarah Russell, and Samantha Jensen visited with KCNI/KBBN sports about the upcoming season. Jensen said that there is still time to sign up for DYO activities but the deadline is quickly approaching.
“All signups are through the same form or link, if you will, and that is currently open until April 1st. A lot of the older kids are already practicing so if you’re not signed up you really need to be as soon as possible. Definitely the youth kids, blast ball, tee ball, and coach pitch April 1st so we can start getting jerseys, equipment, all the things that we need to have to have a successful season.”
DYO is still in need of volunteers to assist with the upcoming season. While there are still openings for coaches at certain levels, Russell and Page said some of the areas where there is the greatest need for help is field maintenance and assisting during the games.
“One thing we really need help with I think across the board is just parent help like helping chalk fields and volunteers to do some of the little things. Even scoreboard. Sometimes people are a little intimidated by that but it’s actually really easy. We are a community driven organization so it takes a lot of parents and volunteers so if you are willing and able we would love to have volunteers. Even if you don’t have a child playing, step up. If you love the game of softball and baseball what better way to get involved.”
The Spirit softball team will be hosting a special kickoff night and event on Tuesday March 18th beginning at 6:30 p.m. The event is open to those who want to be a part of the Spirit softball programs this year and their parents. The event will take place at Pleasure Lanes in Broken Bow. The Spirit softball program is also selling raffle tickets with the grand prize being a $500 gift card to Grocery Kart and the runner up prize a “wallet full” of gift cards to area businesses. The American Legion baseball teams are also conducting a raffle fundraiser for a brand new rifle.
