The SEM Mustangs advanced to the six man football championship game for the second year in a row with a 38-12 win over Garden County in the state semifinals on Friday. After a scoreless first quarter, SEM put together a 72 yard touchdown drive with Maddox Jones scoring his first of two touchdowns on the night with a one yard touchdown run on 4th down and goal. With just over a minute remaining in the first half, SEM extended their lead to 14-0 on a five yard touchdown run by Maddox Jones. The Mustangs pulled away in the second half thanks to special teams. Garden County opened the second half by kicking the ball on the ground on the kickoff but it was scooped up by Jordan Scoville and returned for a touchdown to put SEM up 22-0. Garden County put together a 40 yard touchdown drive with 1:39 left in the third quarter to make the score 22-6 but on the ensuing kickoff SEM’s Chance Daake broke loose returning the kick for a touchdown to put the Mustangs up 30-6. SEM extended their lead to 38-6 when Jordan Scoville scored on a five yard touchdown run with 5:23 left in the game on their way to a 38-12 win. SEM now advances to the six man state championship game next week with the opportunity to defend the championship they won in 2023. Their opponent will be Stuart. Stuart defeated Hay Springs 52-20 in the other six man semifinal. This will be the second meeting of the season between SEM and Stuart. SEM handed Stuart its only loss of the season back on September 6th 36-33. The state championship game will take place on Friday, November 22nd at UNK’s Cope Stadium in Kearney. The game will be broadcast on KBBN 95.3 FM.
