HASTINGS – The Broken Bow Spirit 18U softball team defeated Palmyra 8-3 and improved their state tournament record to 2-1 Saturday afternoon.
Both teams went scoreless through two innings before each notching a run in the third. The Spirit then went on to outscore the opponents 7 to 2 to secure the victory in a grind of a game that saw 13 total errors make the box score.
Lily Thornton got the start on the mound for Broken Bow, her third straight appearance in as many games at the tournament. She allowed one hit and one run over three innings with three strikeouts and two walks. Laney Holcomb pitched four relief innings giving up two hits and two runs while striking out one and walking one.
Katelyn Berggren led the Spirit offensively, going 2 for 3 with two RBIs. The team ran the bases aggressively, stealing six.
Broken Bow moves forward in the losers bracket to face the Hartington Penguins Sunday morning at 8 AM. It is the first of a possible five games that stand between the Spirit and a state championship.
