Broken Bow Spirit wins opening game of state tournament

HASTINGS – The Broken Bow Spirit 18U softball team opened state play in Hastings Friday evening at Smith Softball Complex, defeating the Nebraska Quakes by a score of 6-3. Broken Bow scored their six runs with six hits compared to the Quakes three runs on four hits.

After both teams posted a scoreless first inning, Broken Bow responded to the Quakes run scored in the top of the second with four scores of their own. A Katelyn Berggren walk, Laney Dahlberg double, and Avery Svoboda single brought in the runs in the highest scoring inning for the Spirit. Svoboda went two for two on the day with three RBIs.

The Quakes were able to muster two runs in the top of the third, but Broken Bow responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth to tally the eventual final score.

Lily Thornton pitched a complete game for the Spirit allowing four hits over five innings of work while striking out eight and walking just two.

The Spirit will continue their journey at state Saturday as they take on Ponca 18U at 11 AM, who are coming off of a 7-0 victory over KT Diamonds 18U. The winner of that game would be back in action Saturday evening at 8 PM against the winner of Wakefield and Hartington.
