BROKEN BOW, NE – The Custer County Board of Supervisors met Tuesday morning (May 28) in regular session. Supervisors Dwain Bryner, Sara Parliament, Lynn Longmore, Chip Blowers, and Tammy Kleeb appeared in person with Supervisor Anne Gibbons present via phone.
Supervisor Dwain Bryner informed the board of a change order on the courthouse steps project in the amount of $44,339. The order exists due to the discovery of hollow areas on the right and left side of the steps, the need to have a solid foundation poured for the new steps since a sufficient one doesn’t currently exist, and having to use GeoFoam instead of dirt for support. The project, originally approved in the amount of $168,105, will now cost $212,444. Sufficient funds were stated to be ready and available in the same account being utilized before the change order. The change order was approved.

The board voted unanimously to vacate the town of Lomax, Nebraska, an inactive unincorporated location in Custer County. Custer County Attorney Steve Bowers said the location had been platted but was never further established.
A similar item approved the termination of the Corner Township. A public hearing had been held and no appointment to the township board had happened since that hearing. Township business will be conducted by the Board of Supervisors going forward.
Custer County Assessor Elise Taylor presented the contract for parcel appraising with Central Plains Valuation. The contract, $11,900 with a $1,365 credit to run to mid March 2025 was approved unanimously.
The Custer County match for Region III Behavioral Health in the amount of $27,873.81 was approved for services to the area to continue, a slight increase of just over $220 due to population.
Weed Superintendent Tim Conover appeared before the board regarding the setting of spraying fees for Custer County. There is currently no resolution in place should a forced spraying need to take place after non-compliance takes place with the current noxious weed notification system. A resolution number will be made and the item will be on a future agenda.
The purchase of a vibratory steel roller continued Tuesday. Quotes were narrowed to a HAMM HD110IV0 66 inch drum machine from Murphy Tractor and a HAMM HD120IV0 78 inch drum machine from Raleigh Nott Equipment Sales. Both machines cost between $60,000 and $70,000. The board voted to give the Highway Department the authority to execute a purchase order pending review of the 66 inch unit for sale located in Omaha.
The county’s non-functioning vibratory machine and a wheel crane were declared as surplus property.
