A woman died in a crash Monday night after her vehicle overturned in a field west of Interstate 80 near Council Bluffs.
Melanie Thompson, 46, was traveling westbound on I-80 when, for an unknown reason, her vehicle left the roadway. The car went down an embankment and overturned, coming to a rest on its wheels in a field.
Authorities reported to the scene at about 6:30 p.m.
Thompson, of Avoca, Iowa, was transported to Mercy Hospital, 800 Mercy Drive, Council Bluffs, where she was pronounced dead.
A passenger — 9-year-old Brianna Milledge, also of Avoca — survived the crash. She was transported to Children’s Hospital & Medical Center.
Thompson was not belted in, but Brianna was. according to the Iowa State Patrol.
