Three badly injured in fiery head-on crash near Mead, Nebraska

Three people suffered critical injuries and were flown by medical helicopters to Omaha for treatment after a fiery head-on crash north of Mead, Nebraska, on Thursday afternoon. The crash occurred about 2:30 p.m. on U.S. Highway 77 near County Road O, said Saunders County Attorney Steven Twohig. One of the cars veered from its own lane into the oncoming lane, and the two vehicles collided, authorities said. One of the vehicles caught fire. The three occupants of the vehicles — all were adults — were flown in separate helicopters to Omaha. At least one went to Creighton University Medical Center-Bergan Mercy. Traffic in both directions was rerouted as the crash was cleaned up and investigated.
