A 17-year-old mother will stand trial after medical staff noticed her 2-month-old daughter had suffered broken bones and brain hemorrhages.
Arianna Stout faces up to 50 years in prison if convicted on a charge of intentional child abuse.
Stout took her daughter to Children’s Hospital & Medical Center on Nov. 11 when she saw the girl had a swollen leg and a bruised cheek, according to court records.
The girl was admitted into the neonatal intensive care unit because an examination revealed the baby had “numerous bone fractures, retinal hemorrhages and brain hemorrhages,” according to an affidavit.
The alleged incident occurred the evening of Nov. 10 at Stout’s home near 50th and B Streets, according to a police report.
Stout told officials she “tossed” the baby on a couch and picked her up by her wrists, the affidavit says. She also admitted that she waited to seek medical attention after she noticed injuries, according to the affidavit.
Stout and the baby’s father both attend Blackburn High School, authorities said. The father has not been charged, but the baby has been named a ward of the state pending a court case involving a neglected juvenile.
The baby, now 3 months old, is no longer a patient at Children’s, a hospital spokeswoman said.
