Omaha man who was arrested in connection with downtown shooting is held on $250,000 bail

A 20-year-old Omahan was ordered held on $250,000 bail after being charged Monday in Douglas County Court with being a felon in possession of a handgun. Markese L. Davis' arrest was made in connection with the June 2 shooting death of Jasmine Harris, 20, in downtown Omaha, according to Omaha police. Harris was an innocent bystander in a gang-related conflict that occurred shortly before midnight. A prosecutor said Davis was known to be in possession of a gun before and after the shooting. It’s unclear what role Davis may have played in the shooting. He has not been accused of or charged with murder or assault. Davis must pay 10 percent of the bail amount, or $25,000, to be released from jail. Douglas County Judge Derek Vaughn scheduled a preliminary hearing on July 13 for Davis to determine whether he will stand trial in District Court. On the night of June 2, officers responded to reports of a shooting near 11th and Farnam Streets, where they found Harris with life-threatening gunshot wounds. Harris later died at a hospital. Six other victims were treated for less-serious gunshot wounds. Another was injured by flying glass. The Saturday night shooting, which occurred as many Omahans left the popular Taste of Omaha festival, left the city shaken as the death occurred in a busy entertainment area. Davis was on probation for a 2016 conviction of possessing a stolen gun. According to court documents, he was released from a rehabilitation program in Lincoln in April and was required to wear an ankle bracelet that monitored his location. The shooting, in which cars along Farnam Street were sprayed with bullets, followed an “extremely violent month” of May, police said, with 21 shooting victims . The homicide investigation is ongoing, according to police.
