Motorcyclist who died in head-on collision with SUV near Waverly is identified

A 51-year-old motorcyclist died Sunday in a head-on collision with an SUV near Waverly, Nebraska, the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office said. Early Monday, authorities identified the motorcyclist as Ronald Corum Jr. of Greenwood, Nebraska. The driver of the sport utility vehicle, a Ford Excursion, was identified as Mark Leavitt, 44, of rural Lincoln, said Capt. Tom Brookhouser of the Sheriff’s Office. Leavitt and one of his six passengers were treated at the scene for minor injuries. The other passengers were not injured, he said. The collision was reported at 5:07 p.m. on U.S. Highway 6 east of Waverly between 148th and 162nd Streets, authorities said. Corum was headed east on the highway on a 2015 Harley Davidson that collided with the westbound Excursion in the westbound lane of the two-lane road, Brookhouser said. The cause of the crash remained under investigation Monday. An autopsy has been ordered by the Lancaster County Attorney's Office. There was no preliminary indication of alcohol use, the captain said, and Corum had been wearing a helmet. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The motorcycle was left in flames after the impact. Highway 6 was closed for about three hours during the crash investigation.
