KEARNEY, Neb. — There’s no such thing as a routine call for police. Kearney Police Department officer Ryan Chramosta can attest to that after responding to a medical call Tuesday in which he witnessed a birth.
At 6:29 a.m. Kearney police were dispatched to a house for a woman having labor pains. Chramosta was the lone officer who responded .
When he went inside the house, a woman assisting the soon-to-be-mother yelled at Chramosta to come to the back room and grab towels. When Chramosta reached the room the baby was being delivered in front of him.
“When I got back there the baby was coming out and she was pretty much done,” he said.
Chramosta helped the woman clean the baby, and anxiously waited for paramedics to arrive.
“It felt like awhile, but it was probably only a couple of minutes when the paramedics showed up,” he said.
During his 4-year career Chramosta has responded to calls for women in labor but none where he witnessed a birth.
“I think they were about as shocked as I was,” said Chramosta about the mother and the other woman.
The mother and baby girl were transported to Good Samaritan Hospital where they were doing well, Chramosta said.
For his efforts, CHI paramedics who responded to the scene later gave Chramosta a 16-inch pink Eileen’s cookie for his first delivery on duty.
