Celebrating girls wrestling in NSAA

WINNEBAGO, Neb. — Girls wrestling will be an official NSAA sport, beginning in the 2021-22 academic year.

For Winnebago Public Schools, the historic decision was just one step in a journey of wrestling’s growth — they’ve already seen girls wrestle with them for five years. Head Coach Adam Tranmer said often they’re even better than the boys, and deserve their own fair league.

“I was so excited,” he said of the decision.

“I think this is gonna get girls excited, hopefully, next year we’ll have a full team,” athletic director Adam James said.

One of his players, Darian Earth, said she is proud to be recognized. She enjoys using the sport as an outlet for her competitive spirit.

Tranmer imagines Earth and her team holding a state championship banner one day.

The first girl’s wrestling state tournament will be next February.
