LOUISIANA – The madness is real in March, even on the water.
Team Kayakjak’s Outfitters, a kayak fishing team from the midwest, was considered an “underdog” and “dark horse” to win the National Kayak Bass Fishing Tournament last weekend at Louisiana Downs.
The team, captained by Auburn High School Principal Marty Hughes, surged to victory with ten fish – totaling 194 inches. Other team members include Joshua Booth (Missouri), James Francis (Omaha), Richie McMichael (Kansas) and Jeremiah Smith (Texas).
“It’s kind of like the Auburn boys basketball team being unrated with no seniors and going onto win the state championship,” Hughes said.
Hughes finished 37th individually among the 461 anglers.
Booth posted bass of 21″ and 21.25″ to lead the group. Smith was behind him at 42 total inches. McMichael and Francis filled in the winning score with 37.00″ and 36.75″, respectively.
Team Kayakjak’s Outfitters won the top prize of $10,000 for coming in first place.
The team will be conducting a free kayak fishing school at Duck Creek Recreation Area at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
