Attorney General Jeff Sessions is coming to Omaha

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions is scheduled to visit Omaha on Thursday to make an announcement regarding law enforcement actions to combat the opioid crisis. The announcement will involve a case related to the synthetic drug fentanyl and opioids, according to a Justice Department spokeswoman. Sessions is scheduled to appear at a press conference with Robert Patterson, acting director of the Drug Enforcement Administration. The event will be at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Omaha. Nebraska law enforcement officers recently have been involved in two cases involving large amounts of fentanyl. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times more potent than morphine, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. On April 26, Nebraska State Patrol troopers seized 118 pounds of fentanyl in a traffic stop on Interstate 80 near Kearney. It was the largest single seizure of the drug in Nebraska history and one of the largest such busts in the country. In October, DEA and patrol officials seized 33 pounds of fentanyl found inside luggage at Omaha’s Amtrak train station near Ninth and Pacific Streets.
