Rice sets female record at NASP state tournament
LINCOLN, Neb. – Katheryn Rice of Cornerstone Christian in Bellevue set a state record high score for females in the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) state tournament March 23 at Speedway Sporting Village in Lincoln.
Rice scored 289 out of a possible 300 points for the highest score of the meet. Her score broke the all-time female mark by one point set by two girls in 2018.
The high male score of the tournament was a 288 by Lincoln East’s David Lynch.
The 2019 event, the 14th in Nebraska, saw a record 40 schools participate, with 780 archers. Archers shot 15 arrows at targets from 10 meters and 15 arrows from 15 meters.
NASP is an in-school curriculum covering target archery for students in grades 4-12. In Nebraska, more than 280 schools have NASP as part of their physical education curriculum, and nearly 35,000 students participate each school year. The state tournament is the largest archery event in Nebraska.

Trout to be stocked in three more Panhandle lakes March 27
LINCOLN, Neb. – Three more Panhandle lakes will be stocked with rainbow trout March 27, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.
The Rock Creek State Fish Hatchery will stock 10-inch trout in the following Scotts Bluff County lakes: Terry’s Pit, Terrytown, 1,500; Morrill north sandpit, 1,350; and Morrill middle sandpit, 450.

Learn to Hunt Spring Turkey event is March 28
LINCOLN, Neb. – Unravel the mystery, excitement and challenge of spring turkey hunting by attending a free workshop March 28 at Platte River State Park near Louisville.
The Learn to Hunt Spring Turkey workshop will run from 6-8:30 p.m. at Scott Lodge.
Topics will include basics, biology, scouting, equipment, strategies and more. This event is designed for those with limited experience and is ideal for those wanting to expand into this pursuit. A park entry permit is required.

Experience Platte River State Park event is April 27
LINCOLN, Neb. – Women are invited to spend a fun, relaxing day at Platte River State Park on April 27 as part of a Beyond Becoming an Outdoors-Woman event.
From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., participants age 18 and older in the Experience Platte River State Park event will spend time at the range shooting rifles, shotguns and bows, hike the park’s trails and explore Crawdad Creek.

More rainbow trout stockings scheduled for March 30
LINCOLN, Neb. – Seven more lakes and ponds are scheduled to be stocked with rainbow trout March 30, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.
The Rock Creek State Fish Hatchery will stock 10-inch trout in the following locations, with quantities and approximate times (give or take 30 minutes): Oxford City Lake, 150, 11 a.m.; Plum Creek Park Pond, Lexington, 750, noon; and Lake Helen, Gothenburg, 2,000, 12:45 p.m.
The Calamus State Fish Hatchery stocking schedule, with deliveries from separate trucks, is: Neligh Park Pond, West Point, 900, 11:30 a.m.; and Holmes Lake, Lincoln, 4,000, 11:30 a.m.
The Grove Trout Rearing Station, which has not been operational since recent flooding, will deliver trout from Calamus as follows: TaHaZouka Park Lake, Norfolk, 1,500, 10 a.m.; and Pawnee Park West Lake, Columbus, 1,500, 11:15 a.m.

April 5 clinic to help women select the perfect shotgun
LINCOLN, Neb. – Women interested in learning how to pick the perfect shotgun for their next hunting and shooting sports endeavor are invited to attend the Women’s Shotgun Selection Clinic April 5.
Experts from Scheels will teach participants what to look for when buying a shotgun, and how to select a shotgun that is a good fit for them.
The clinic will be held at the Scheels store in Lincoln, located at 3030 Pine Lake Road, and takes place from 6-8 p.m. Registration costs $10. At the end of the workshop all attendees will receive a $10 Scheels gift card.

Swanson Reservoir has 5 mph/no wake restriction until further notice
LINCOLN, Neb. – Swanson Reservoir in Hitchcock County is under a 5 mph/no wake boating restriction until further notice because of the presence of a mat of floating debris on the lake surface.
Staff are assessing removal of the debris and a public notice will be sent when the boating restriction is removed.
Boating and fishing still are allowed on the lake.
Producers in southwest Nebraska eligible for cover crop initiative
LINCOLN, Neb. – Ag producers in Frontier, Furnas, Harlan, Hayes, Hitchcock, and Red Willow counties are eligible to receive $61.20 per acre assistance for planting multispecies cover crops.
Cover crops can be planted in the spring for a full growing season or after wheat or other summer-harvested crop, and grazing is allowed.
“Cover crops can be established on whole fields, partial fields, or as field borders,” said Eric Zach, ag program manager for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. “Cover crops planted as a field border can help with weed suppression and provide high quality forage when gleaning stocks.”
The Regional Conservation Partnership Program’s Cropland Cover Initiative provides financial and technical assistance to ag producers who adopt multispecies cover-crop mixtures for improving soil health and wildlife habitat. Cost share is available for cover crop seed and planting.
“Cover crops provide a supplemental forage source, suppress weeds, improve moisture infiltration, boost soil organic matter, and provide habitat for wildlife,” Zach said.
The application deadline is May 3.
This Cropland Cover Initiative is a partnership between the Natural Resources Conservation Service, Game and Parks, Pheasants Forever, Quail Forever and Nebraska Environmental Trust.

Access to Blue Lake closed temporarily
LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is temporarily closing access to Blue Lake in the Sandhills of Garden County while the ground thaws.
Commission fisheries staff decided this week to close the 2.7-mile two-track trail through private property because of poor road conditions brought on by a wet spring. A lease agreement between the Commission and a private landowner provides access to the remote lake.
The Commission will reopen the road when conditions improve.
Several sandhill lakes in the Garden County region are experiencing higher than normal water this year. The Crescent Lake National Wildlife Refuge has also closed access to the Island Lake Loop Trail, and two of the three access points to Island Lake due to flooding along the trail. County Road 108, which provides access to the west side of the refuge, also has been closed due to high water and mud.
The best access route to the Crescent Lake National Wildlife Refuge and Crescent Lake Wildlife Management Area until conditions improve is from Highway 26, north through Oshkosh.
