Mullen and Burwell Go for State Football Championships Today

The Mullen Broncos will play for the Class D2 state football championship today at Lincoln’s Memorial Stadium. Leading the way for the Broncos is senior running back Lane Edis who will play the final game of his amazing high school career. Edis comes into today’s game with 2,598 yards rushing this season which is 130 yards behind the school record which was set by his dad Wade in 1990 when Mullen won its first state title. The 180 lb. senior running back has 51 touchdowns this season and his career totals stand at 6,703 yards and a school record 142 touchdowns.
Standing in the way of the Broncos’ and another state football title is undefeated Johnson Brock who defeated Humphrey St. Francis in the semifinals 58-44 to advance to their first ever state championship appearance.
Today’s D2 championship game is scheduled to kickoff at 10:15 this morning.

The Burwell Longhorns will make their 3rd state championship appearance in the last 4 years today when they meet Creighton in Lincoln. The Longhorns won the title in 2016 and were runners up in 2015. Both Burwell and Creighton are undefeated and will face each other this afternoon at 2:45.

In the nightcap of today’s championship tripleheader, Grand Island will face top seeded and undefeated Omaha Burke for the Class A championship tonight at 7:15. The Islanders are 10-2 this season and last played for the Class A title in 1990 when they fell to Papillion La Vista in the championship game.
