Mullen, ALC, and Burwell Advance ; South Loup and S/T Fall in State Playoffs

The Arcadia/Loup City Rebels advanced to the quarterfinals of the Class D1 state football playoffs Wednesday with a 34-28 win over Hemingford. After falling behind 6-0, Arcadia/Loup City scored 34 unanswered points to lead 34-6 at halftime. Hemingford would fight back in the 2nd half scoring 22 unanswered points to climb to within 34-28 with 11:27 left in the 4th quarter. The Rebels had an opportunity to up by two scores late in the game but were held on 4th down and goal from the 1. That gave the Bobcats one last chance but the Rebels defense came up with a stop to preserve the win. Caden Kusek ran for 3 touchdowns and Jaden Jones threw for 2 touchdowns as the Rebels improve to 6-4 on the season and will prepare to meet undefeated Burwell in the quarterfinals as the Longhorns shut out Sutherland 48-0. The two met earlier in the season with Burwell winning 21-12.

In other D1 action, the South Loup Bobcats saw their season come to an end with a heartbreaking overtime loss to Dundy County Stratton. The game went to overtime tied at 14. DCS had the first overtime possession and scored on their first play but failed on the 2 point conversion to make the score 20-14. South Loup was stopped short of the goal line on 4th and 1 on their overtime possession allowing DCS to advance to the quarterfinals where they will meet North Central. Jace Connell ran for 160 yards and 1 touchdown and Cole Gracey also ran for a touchdown for the Bobcats. South Loup ends their season at 8-2.

The Mullen Broncos advanced to the Class D2 quarterfinals with a 38-14 win over Garden County Wednesday night. Mullen will now host Overton who hung on to defeat Sandhills/Thedford 30-24. The Knights end their season at 8-2.
