Today we continue with our fall sports previews with a look at the Anselmo-Merna football team. The Coyotes finished 3-5 in the regular season last year and qualified for the Class D2 playoffs. Coach Matt McGinn told KCNI/KBBN that 30 athletes are out for football this year which is the largest number that he has worked with during his tenure as head coach. The schedule will have a different look this year as AM moves up to Class D1. The Coyotes will compete in the D1-8 district with Amherst, Arcadia/Loup City, Burwell, and Ravenna. Coach McGinn said that he is excited to go up against some different teams and is looking forward to the challenge ahead.
Every year high school sports teams have to deal with filling positions that are vacated by players who have graduated. Coach McGinn said that one of the areas of focus in fall camp is filling the hole at quarterback.
AM will start the season Thursday (8/27) when they host Ansley/Litchfield then travel to Hemingford and South Loup in back to back weeks to wrap up their non-district schedule. The Coyotes will be featured in KBBN’s area game of the week when they play Ansley/Litchfield in the season opener, on Sept. 11th at South Loup, and in their regular season finale on October 16th when they travel to Arcadia/Loup City.
