ELKHORN – The Elkhorn High School boys basketball team will be led by a new head coach with state tournament experience next season.

Erik Kohl, who spent the past two seasons as an assistant varsity coach and head junior varsity coach at Lincoln Southwest High School, will take over for Spencer Peterson in August. Peterson coached the Antlers for six seasons. They finished with a 4-17 record last winter.

“Elkhorn seems like a great fit for me and I’m very excited for the opportunity at Elkhorn as both a teacher and basketball coach,” Kohl said.

His last head coaching stint was in Sidney, Neb. where he guided the Red Raiders to a 75-25 record in four seasons. Kohl took Sidney to the Nebraska School Activities Association State Basketball Championships twice, including a runner-up finish in 2015. He was named the Scottsbluff Star-Herald Coach of they Year that season.

In six years as a head coach, Kohl has a career record of 98-51.

He will be involved with offseason training at Elkhorn this summer and is “looking forward to starting the process of creating a positive, hard working and value oriented basketball culture that the community will be proud of.”

Current Southwest Head Coach Alex Bahe coached at Elkhorn for six years.

Kohl is a graduate of Peru State College where he was a member of the Bobcat basketball team.
