Woman Could Face Two Years in Jail
County Court held on Monday

Karla A. Hickenbottom, 42 of Ansley, appeared in County Court on Monday morning for allegedly committing a Class IV felony in June of this year: theft by taking. The removal of property was said to be more than $1,500 but less than $5,000. Judge Tami Schendt said in court that Hickenbottom could face a maximum two years in jail, fines, or both. She will appear on August 14 at 1:30pm for preliminary hearing.

A continuance to September 11 was granted for Rebecca A. Baumann, 23 of Grand Island. Baumann is dealing with scheduling issues in Merrick County and is also in the process of a pre-sentence investigation.

The morning was also filled misdemeanor cases and two felony cases were continued.

In the afternoon, Cole M. Arnold, 32 of Merna, appeared for sentencing. Arnold had previously been found guilty of Driving Under the Influence, non-aggravated, third offense. Arnold’s attorney David Jorgensen believes Arnold is a suitable candidate for probation. Judge Schendt sentenced Arnold to 30 days in jail beginning August 7, two years probation, a $1,000 fine plus court costs, blood test and enrollment fees.

Cleveland D. Sledge 51 of Broken Bow appeared for preliminary hearing, which was waived, for the complaint of possession of a financial transaction device, a Class IV felony.  Court documents say that “on or about June 27, 2017, with intent to defraud, [Sledge] possess(ed) a financial transaction device of three other persons, which defendant knew to be stolen.” His case has been bound over to District Court and he will appear for arraignment on July 27 at 9:30am.

Three cases were bound over to District Court for Randy Judd, 18 of Broken Bow, for alleged theft by taking and burglary. Three preliminary hearings were waived and Judd will appear in District Court on July 27 at 9:30am.

Dezarey R. Shimko, 38 of Broken Bow, appeared for a bond review for the complaint of possession of a financial transaction device, a Class IV felony. Her attorney Preston Peterson requested a bond reduction, which the court granted and reduced the bond to $20,000 with a 10% privilege.

Alexxis Rayne Shimko, 21 of Litchfield, and her attorney Gary Peterson were denied a bond reduction for the complaint filed against her of possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine according to court documents), a Class IV felony. Her bond remains the same at $10,000 with a 10% privilege and she will appear back in court on July 31 at 2:30pm.

Many other cases were continued to later dates.
