Fire at Highway 183 and Weissert Road

CUSTER COUNTY— Ansley and Mason City Fire and Rescue departments were in full action in the late morning and afternoon on Monday, April 8 as they responded to two grass fires on the east side of Custer County. The first fire call came in around 11:14 AM with reports of a grass fire 1 ½ miles north of Berwyn. Both Ansley and Mason City responded and were able to put the fire out at around 12:30 PM.

As both fire departments were in the process of heading back to their respective stations, a second call came in with reports of a larger grass fire at the intersection of Nebraska Highway 183 and Weissert Road. Both departments responded immediately and were able to control the fire quickly and finished just before 2 PM.

The second fire was contained to the east side of Highway 183 and burned an area slightly larger than a football field. The fire did burn out of the ditch and caused some damage to the property directly east highway.
