UPDATE – A spokesperson for Hiland Dairy says in a statement Friday afternoon, the Hiland Dairy Norfolk Facility was not operational and was performing routine maintenance when a small isolated ammonia release occurred. One employee was injured and is being treated in Lincoln at this time. Hiland says the release was contained immediately and there was no danger to the surrounding environment.
ORIGINAL STORY – At least two people are injured in an ammonia leak at a Norfolk dairy plant Friday.
Norfolk Fire and Rescue crews responded to the scene at the Hiland Dairy building at 700 East Omaha Avenue in Norfolk around 11:30 a.m. Friday.
Norfolk Fire Captain Lannce Grothe says two people were injured in the incident. One person was taken to Faith Regional in Norfolk and one person was flown from the scene due to the injuries.
Grothe says there was no ongoing or active leaks and there was no threat to the public during the incident.
The exact cause of the ammonia leak or the extent of the injuries are unknown at this time.
