Superheroes of the Sandhills Cancer Fundraiser this Sunday in Thedford

THEDFORD—Everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer. For this very reason, the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) club at Thedford Schools wanted to give back to the community by starting the Superheroes of the Sandhills Cancer Fundraiser. This Sunday marks the fourth annual event, with all proceeds going to the Sandhills Cancer Fund.

Thedford senior Hannah Higgins said she was a freshman when the event began, after she and her sister lost their grandpa due to cancer. The Sandhills Cancer Fund assists families here in the area.

“The Sandhills Cancer Fund is an awesome fund to help out local people. So, you know exactly where it’s going: it’s going to the people you see every day throughout your community. So you know it’s going to a good cause,” Higgins said.

This Sunday (April 29) there are activities for everyone at Thedford High School–from bridge and pitch to a three-on-three basketball competition. Registration for the 5K walk/run begins at 1 p.m. and the race starts at 1:30. Entrants receive a free t-shirt and there is a discounted registration fee for those who do both the 5K and basketball.

Bridge and pitch will take place in the high school library for a freewill donation and a silent auction will take place from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. Frozen Runzas and Fresh Runzas will be available from 4 to 7 p.m.

Higgins said the event has evolved over the years but some favorite events continue year after year. She said anyone can register by visiting the website at https://superheroes-of-the-sandhills.weebly.com/, contacting Hannah (402-322-9997 or [email protected]), or registering the day of the event.

“If anybody can I hope that they come down, it’s a really great cause and we could use as many people as possible,” Higgins said.
