Statue Pays Homage to Legendary Ponca Chief

NIOBRARA - A tribal legend now has a permanent shrine to his memory. Members of the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska dedicated a statue of Chief Standing Bear during the annual Ponca Pow Wow on Saturday. The unveiling was part of a ceremony that featured members of the Ponca tribe both current and past, and even some of Standing Bear's descendants. The statue is the second of its kind. An identical version of the ten-foot sculpture was dedicated in Lincoln's Centennial Mall last October. Standing Bear was with the Ponca Tribe in 1877, when they were forced to leave their home in 1877 by a federal treaty for Indian Territory in what is now Oklahoma.
