Last summer he listed his political options admitting that if he ran as a Republican he would get "almost no traction" against Fischer in the primary because "she is pro-life and I am pro-choice (with a 20 week cutoff for most abortions)."
Heidel also dismissed running as an independent, "This is futile without huge name recognition or financial resources, of which I have neither."
But he did see a path to victory as a Democrat, "I could be credibly hammering (Fischer) as a big spender."
All that said he has opted for the GOP fight, the kind he lost once before when he took on then-Congressman Lee Terry in 2012. Heidel finished third in the five-man primary, 50 points behind Terry.
Heidel kicks-off his campaign tomorrow (Wednesday) as he joins Todd Watson (see NCN report on Watson here) in what is now a three-person GOP fight.

Omaha, NE.—As he looks to take out Republican Sen. Deb Fischer in the GOP's May primary it appears a retired college math professor just hasn't crunched the numbers.
Although Jack Heidel is first and foremost running to cut the national debt, he's at odds with his own party on several key issues—starting with who is in the White House—according to Heidel's blog posts examined by News Channel Nebraska.
Not only did Heidel not vote for Donald Trump, Heidel cast his presidential ballot for Hillary Clinton.
