Northeast Nebraskans Face Icy Conditions Monday Morning

NORFOLK — Northeast Nebraskans woke up to a solid layer of ice Monday morning as another blast of winter weather hit the region. Sunday started sunny and comfortable, then moved to windy and cold before getting icy and creating slick conditions for the Monday commute. As much as .05” of ice accumulated across the area meaning most folks were breaking out the ice scrapers. Icy roads led to spinning tires on some Norfolk roads. As of 11:00 AM, most of the highways in the area were listed as partially covered while highways in the north and east of Norfolk were listed as completely covered according to the Nebraska Department of Roads 511 map. Traffic cameras on Highway 275 near Battle Creek show passable, but icy conditions. Move up to the Ponca cameras and you don’t see much, a sheet of ice took that camera out of commission. Some area schools responded to the conditions by opting for a delayed start. The wind died down some throughout Monday but was blustery on Sunday, blowing as fast as 53 miles per hour in Norfolk.
