Norfolkans Brave Cold for Christmas Festival

NORFOLK — The Norfolk community officially kicked off the holiday season with the Downtown Riverpoint Christmas Festival on Tuesday. Mother Nature even chipped in to make it feel like Christmas by dropping temperatures to a frigid 25 degrees. But hundreds braved the weather to shop at downtown stores, ride in carriages and pay a visit to Santa. Festival Chairwoman Jessica Gordon says the community rallies around the event. “It’s just great for the community, a family friendly event,” Gordon said. “Everyone can come down and find something that they like.” Movie characters and musical guests helped add entertainment to the over three-hour event. Gordon says driving the public downtown provides a huge benefit to the local stores. “Obviously they have to compete with the big box stores on Black Friday,” Gordon said. “So what a great way to recognize our small businesses by coming in, shopping local and spending time seeing what great things we have to offer in Norfolk, Nebraska.” The festival closed with the annual tree-lighting at 7th Street and Norfolk Avenue.
